The Spider's Thread: A New Year's Reflection on Leadership
This morning I was walking our dog Saffie when I saw what at first glance looked like a ghostly apparition.
We were down by the River Thames — a spot where she loves to get a drink of water before we play ball — and out of the corner of my eye I saw what appeared to be a twig dancing in the wind, moving towards me. Somewhat startled, I stepped back.
And then something stranger happened. The twig went back into the water — but instead of being carried downstream by the strong current as you'd expect, it held perfectly still, swaying gently back and forth where it floated.
I looked closer. Just barely visible: a single spider's thread, connecting the twig to a tree on the bank.
One thread. Holding that twig steady against the full force of the Thames current.
I watched for several minutes, transfixed. Just as I'd clambered back up the bank to leave, the twig danced again — and this time I managed to capture it on my phone.
I'm not a great one for New Year's resolutions. But this felt like it deserved one.
Be the wind that helps raise people up. Some will be ready for it, some won't — but be intentional about making it happen regardless.
And at the same time, be the secure tether people need. Think of belaying in rock climbing when someone is learning to lead: you give plenty of slack so they can lean into the next hold, fully commit to their route — but you are always there, watching, ready to catch them if it matters.
Not interfering. Not hovering. Not second-guessing their choices. Just there.
One thread. That's sometimes all it takes.
Wishing you all a brilliant 2025. #HappyNewYear #Leadership
