From Infrastructure Guy to Maker: How Vibe Coding Changed Everything

For the majority of my career, I've been the infrastructure guy. The one who sees how things fit together, spots the gaps where something could be better, and understands the foundations on which everything else is built. That mindset has served me well — right through into leadership roles, where the same instinct to identify what is missing and fix it turns out to be just as useful.

But I've always had ideas. Solutions to things that would make my work smoother, my presentations more natural, my collaboration more intuitive. And here's the thing: I didn't have the developer muscle to bring them to life.

Until yesterday.

I built a Python application that does something simple on the surface, but incredibly useful in practice: it duplicates a single window to another monitor — specifically, my Elgato prompter.

That means I can now continue working on my ultrawide screen and have the exact same window scaled and mirrored to the prompter. In practice: I can be fully immersed in a video call, look straight down the lens, and still work the way I want to. No awkward window rearranging. No compromise between productivity and presence.

And I built it. Not a developer team. Not a marketplace tool. Just me, generative AI, and a few lines of Python — plus a stubborn refusal to let the idea go.

They call this vibe coding. I confess I was never completely sure what that meant — but if it's about letting your curiosity lead and building fast without overthinking the architecture, then yes, I am 100% in.

What has changed isn't just that I wrote some code. It's that I can now prototype ideas as quickly as I can imagine them. The loop between thought and execution has collapsed. I'm not just thinking anymore — I'm making.

This shift feels significant. And this week, with Microsoft Build underway and "for the makers" front and centre, it has never felt more personally relevant.

So, if you've ever had an idea you shelved because you didn't have the skills to build it — the gap is closing. With a bit of perseverance, you might surprise yourself.
