Context

I picked this up during the Ibiza reading week immediately after PITCH by Danny Fontaine, which had been tightly focused on craft and structure. The shift in register was deliberate — I wanted something that worked at a different level, further away from the technical and closer to how thinking forms in the first place.

What Stuck

The book is less about creativity as a method and more about creativity as a way of engaging with the world. What stayed with me most was the underlying challenge around perspective. In architecture and systems thinking, we spend time formally defining viewpoints as a way of understanding a system. It is far less common to apply that same rigour to our own assumptions — even though those assumptions shape every viewpoint we choose to take.

Rubin frames creative practice as a continuous process of observing, questioning what you think you see, and staying open to what does not fit your existing model. That is not a passive activity. It requires both discipline and a willingness to be uncomfortable when your current frame stops being sufficient.

Application

Reading it in the context of the other books that week meant it felt less abstract than it might have done in isolation. The lens moved from how ideas are expressed to how they are formed in the first place — and that distinction has practical consequences when you are working with teams on problems that are not yet well understood.

I have returned to it in moments where I notice I am solving for confirmation rather than exploration. It serves as a useful reset.

Reflection

The book will not resonate with everyone. It is more meditative than instructional, and the style is unhurried in a way that requires some patience. But read in the right conditions, it created a kind of spaciousness in thinking that the more structured books that week could not have produced on their own. The contrast between them was part of the value.
